Sunnyhill Alpaca at Open Farm Days

Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Leduc County, Alberta, Sunnyhill Alpacas and the Twisted Sisters Mill is a testament to the dedication and passion of its owners. As we gear up for Alberta Open Farm Days, we invite you to explore this unique farm that has been enchanting visitors since 1998. Let’s delve into what makes Sunnyhill Alpacas and the Twisted Sisters Mill a must-visit destination during this year’s event.

A Journey Through Time

Sunnyhill Alpacas was established in 1998 by Kevin and Leanne Sept, along with Jim and Sharon Adams, and Ann Adams. Over the years, the farm has evolved significantly. In 2002, the farm expanded its operations with the creation of Twisted Sisters Mill, owned by Leanne and her sisters Renee and Marlene. The name “Twisted Sisters” reflects both the process of spinning yarn and the playful nature of the sisters. Starting with humble beginnings and a crash course in mill operations, the family has built a thriving business that processes alpaca fibre into high-quality yarn.

What Makes Sunnyhill Alpacas & the Twisted Sisters Mill Unique?

What sets Sunnyhill Alpacas apart is their focus on producing top-quality fibre. They do not raise alpacas for meat or as pets; their alpacas are bred for their luxurious fibre. With a herd that has grown and evolved over the years, they now boast excellent genetics and a solid breeding program. Their current herd sire, Sunnyhill’s KP’s Zang Pao, is a four-time Supreme Champion. The farm’s meticulous attention to the micron count ensures that their yarn is fine and consistent and soft.

A Glimpse into Daily Operations

Sunnyhill Alpacas is a full-time operation with a herd that has been as large as 125 alpacas. Currently, they maintain around 60 animals, aiming to stay between 40-50. They produce a variety of alpaca yarns, from fingering to super bulky weight, and transform this yarn into finished products like toques, mitts, slippers, socks, scarves, dryer balls, and blankets. Their products are available online, in their farm store, and at various markets, including the Old Strathcona Farmers Market.
