Farms register online to become a Host Farm and host their own event. It is free for farms to participate in Open Farm Days.
Farms participate in Open Farm Days because they are interested in opening their farm up to the public to share how they produce the food we eat and drink.
Registration for farms opens once a year and farms interested in participating in Open Farm Days can email info@albertaopenfarmdays.ca
Absolutely! Open Farm Days is a perfect opportunity to bring your kids to a farm and teach them about how food is produced and gets to their table.
Chose your farm trip with your children in mind depending on what they would like to experience during Open Farm Days.
If you’re planning on participating through Open Farm Days, first check out the farm listing on the website [insert link] and browse through the many categories of farms and regions that you would like to visit.
Things to consider, checking the date the farm is participating (Saturday, Sunday or both days), the time of day they are opening their farm.
Once you’ve made a list (insert next steps for planning trip)
Step #1: Choose Your Host Farms
Visit the host farms page to start adding locations to your trip. Click the green “Add to Trip” button on each farm you want to visit.
Step #2: Review Your Trip
Once you have added all of your farms, click the blue Plan My Trip button to review all of the locations you have chosen.
Step #3: Getting Directions
Once you are happy with your chosen destinations, click the blue “Get Directions” button to generate a Google Map with all of your locations pre-filled and ready to go! Within Google Maps, you can configure or re-order your trip as you like.
You can also enter your location into the “Starting Address” field to get directions starting at that address. Leave this field blank, and Google Maps will use your current location as the starting point.
Absolutely! We encourage you to! There's nothing better than farm fresh product. Our suggestion would be to bring cash as farms might not be set up for debit/credit cards.
Also a great idea to being a cooler for your produce in case you're spending your days visiting farms.
Here are some things you should keep in mind before you hit the road.
- Please make sure you've read the farm descriptions. Some farms require bookings and some do not, but it also gives you an idea of what you can experience at Open Farm Days and how you can prep. You can find the farm listings here: https://albertaopenfarmdays.ca/ofd-farms/
- NEW for 2023, look for the QR code poster and enter the survey to WIN a $250 Gift Card from Peavey Mart!
- Bring cash!! While Open Farm Days is a free event, there may be paid activities. You might see some farm fresh products you’d like to buy, or some farms may have lunch you’ll be able to purchase. Debit/credit card transactions may not be available.
- Bring a cooler! This will be handy for all the fresh products you've purchased.
- Be prepared for the weather (and mosquitoes) and appropriate shoe wear is a must. Farms are not the best place for your nicest/newest shoes.
- Charge your phone/camera because you’re going to want to take a lot of pictures
- No pets. At all. Please leave Rover at home. Pets are not allowed on farms.
- Use the #ABFarmDays hashtag and tag us in all your photos
Be prepared for the weather (and mosquitoes) and appropriate shoe wear is a must (rubber boots, old sneakers).
For long table dinner event, check with your host on attire, and location of event. Sensible walking shoes will be most appropriate.
Many farms are offering a lunch as part of their event. Food events can be a great way to try something new, experience a picnic on a farm and eat delicious local food.

You’ll be visiting working farms and food producers who have volunteered their time to opening their farms/operations for visits. Please listen to instructions and follow protocols set out by the farms and operators. These are working farms and safety is number 1!
