Open Farm Days – Winter Edition

Love Alberta Open Farm Days? How would you like a winter version?

Experience life on the farm in winter! See how the animals keep warm and how farmers job is never (ever) done.

December 14-15  Alberta Open Farm Days is piloting a winter program in Strathmore and Wheatland County in south-central Alberta.

A select number of farms are participating for our inaugural Alberta Open Farm Days – Winter Edition program, some who you may recognize from Open Farm Days this summer!

Participating Farms

Back to Good – Pick up a potato bacon soup and carrot cake for your road trip, or eat in and warm up on December 14 from 10 – 3 pm at Back to Good.  The soup and cake have been made with potatoes and carrots by Poplar Bluff and Carrots by Cam.

Custom Woolen Mills – demonstrations, crafts, hot apple cider, and cookie decorating.  The gift shop will be open where everything is made either at the mill or hand-finished by local artisans using wool from the mill!

EH Farms – tour the farm and see the mangalitsas piglets. More in-depth and educational tours, including weiner roast and drinks, are available for $5 (under age 2 is free) at 11:15, 12:30 and 1:30. The store will be open with plenty of products to stock your freezer for winter. EH farms are collecting donations for the food bank, so feel free to bring a donation.

Your Local Ranch – sleigh rides, cook your own smokie over the fire, hot chocolate and a self-guided tour of livestock. Bring your own skates and toboggan for some winter fun (weather pending). Our meat shop will be open! You can preorder to save you some time. Two Pine farms will be there with their honey display and products.

About Open Farm Days

Alberta Open Farm Days is a collaborative, province-wide, two-day event that gives Albertans an opportunity to experience farms during the winter. This year (2019) marked the 7th year for the summer event in Alberta. Alberta Open Farm Days gives Albertans a backstage pass to meet the farmer, experience Ag-tourism in Alberta and taste local foods direct from the producer.

This is the first year Alberta Open Farm Days has piloted a winter theme event.
