This August, Alberta once again opened its gates for Open Farm Days 2025, and the weekend reminded us why agriculture is at the heart of our province. Nearly 150 host farms welcomed visitors from across Alberta, Canada, and beyond for a weekend filled with learning, connection, and celebration.
From grain fields in the north to ranchlands in the south, farms of every size and type offered Albertans the chance to see where their food comes from, meet the people behind it, and experience firsthand the dedication and innovation that drive Alberta’s agricultural community.
For families searching for things to do in the summer in Alberta, for parents looking for unique things to do with kids in Alberta, or for visitors exploring Edmonton family activities and Calgary family activities, Open Farm Days delivered a truly authentic Canadian experience.
Thank You to Our Host Farms ❤️
At the centre of Open Farm Days are the host farms who make the event possible. Just under 150 farms participated in 2025, ranging from long-standing participants to more than 30 brand-new hosts. Together, they created a patchwork of experiences that reflected the diversity of Alberta agriculture: livestock operations, fruit and vegetable farms, grain growers, ranches, beekeepers, and craft beverage makers.
This year, many hosts reported record-breaking attendance, with visitors lining up to enjoy wagon rides, sample farm-fresh products, try hands-on workshops, and explore Alberta’s beautiful rural landscapes. Our organizing team also visited farms across the province and were struck by the thought, care, and creativity that went into each experience. From carefully planned kids’ activities to educational tours about water use and irrigation, the amount of passion and preparation was evident everywhere.
Our team also had the chance to personally visit farms throughout the weekend, and we were blown away by the level of care and creativity put into each experience. From family-friendly activities and hands-on learning stations to thoughtfully designed tours and tastings, it was clear how much effort each farm invested to make visitors feel welcome. The attention to detail and pride in sharing agriculture was inspiring, and it reminded us why this event is so special year after year.
To every farm family who took part: thank you for opening your gates, for your hospitality, and for the vital work you do every day to feed our province and beyond.
Thank You to Albertans & Visitors 🩵
We also want to thank the thousands of Albertans and visitors who chose to spend their weekend with us. Whether you visited one farm or ten, asked thoughtful questions, or purchased local products to take home, your participation makes Open Farm Days what it is.
Visitor surveys showed a mix of experiences:
-
43.4% visited one farm
-
45.28% visited between two and four farms
-
8.49% visited five to ten farms
-
2.83% registered but were unable to attend
Visitors travelled from near and far—50% drove short distances of 60–100 km, 36% drove 100–300 km, and 13% drove 300–500 km or more. This willingness to travel underscores how valuable authentic agricultural experiences are to Albertans and tourists alike.

We encourage everyone who attended to continue supporting Alberta farms throughout the year. Many visitors told us they discovered new favourite products—whether that was honey, specialty grains, fresh produce, or handmade goods. Buying directly from local farms is one of the most rewarding ways to stay connected long after Open Farm Days has ended.

The Year of Water 💧
Each year, Open Farm Days highlights a theme that connects visitors to a deeper story about agriculture. In 2025, the theme was The Year of Water.
Visitors learned how water is fundamental to every aspect of farming: it irrigates fields, nourishes crops, sustains livestock, and supports food production. Farms shared their own water stewardship practices, from innovative irrigation systems to sustainable grazing management, showing visitors how essential and fragile this resource is.

The theme sparked meaningful conversations and gave Albertans a chance to reflect on the link between agriculture, sustainability, and the environment.
Media & Community Impact 📸
The reach of Open Farm Days went far beyond farm gates. With over 100 media stories across Alberta, the event was featured on television, radio, in newspapers, and across digital platforms. Coverage highlighted everything from family-friendly farmyard fun to the serious issues of sustainability and water management.
Media attention also brought Alberta agriculture into the spotlight for urban audiences in Edmonton and Calgary, reinforcing Open Farm Days as one of the most meaningful and educational Edmonton things to do with family and one of the most exciting Calgary family activities each summer.
This widespread attention ensures that even those who couldn’t attend in person were able to learn about Alberta’s agricultural sector and its importance to our economy and communities.
Looking Ahead to 2026 🌾
As we wrap up 2025, we’re already preparing for what’s next. The upcoming year will be particularly special as we celebrate the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists. This global initiative will give Alberta the chance to highlight the importance of its grasslands, ranching traditions, and pastoral communities.

Expect even more experiences in 2026 that showcase the stewardship, sustainability, and heritage of Alberta agriculture.
